it's interesting to see how, on BlueSky, one of the things that have really set it apart is how there's been an absolute explosion of interesting and useful projects building tooling to make the experience better (and safer!) for everyone, without strictly requiring the core devs to do anything.
But the moment anyone does ANYTHING to do anything at all with people's posts on Mastodon, there's riots in the streets and the devs are immediately harassed and chased out of town, with no room for discussion--just straight-up attacks, even personal ones, and escalation from there, up to and including threats.
This is literally why we can't have nice things. And on top of that, the Mastodon core project isn't really addressing the problem by giving individuals the tools they would need to manage the propagation of their own content.
But in the end, I think a lot of people seem to think that the correct way to deal with the fact that they are, in fact, posting fully public information that others might do things with, is to outright attack anyone who does things "honestly", as opposed to adding secret/sneaky tools to work around intended restrictions.
