    Look folks I know that the idea of defederation is scary.

    But it's not going to break FOSS or the fediverse. People do. By the political choices they want to make. Choosing FOSS is a political act. Wanting to have nothing to do with Fascists is a political act.

    On here it's not just about free speech, it's freedom of association.

    We don't need to connect to every single person on the planet. We have that choice.

      @onepict
      It isn't clear to me why this: https://codeberg.org/streams/streams
      -- which seems to have a much more nuanced approach to federation and association built in -- hasn't attracted more attention, let alone adopters.

          Makes me wish I had the coding know-how to do something with it.

            (((streams))) and Mike's newer project Forte are really interesting -- Forte has nomadic identity over ActivityPub, But, nobody's heard about them, and that's a big barrier to widespread adoption. I'm also not sure what the user experience is; these are forks of Friendica/Hubzilla, where the UX is, um, challenging.

              Bearing in mind that I don't really know what I'm doing.... and that I have what must be regarded as political motivations:
              https://seizethemeans.communitarium.org/baslow/the-communitarium-project
              https://seizethemeans.communitarium.org/baslow/socialist-media-platforms-part-ii-the-bigger-picture
              https://seizethemeans.communitarium.org/baslow/communitaria-what-we-need-to-do-i-think
              I can invite people who want to discuss this further ( and, possibly, work on it) to register at this instance: https://social.communitarium.org
              ...with the understanding that if it turns into a shitshow I'll pull it down.

                Fun feature: (streams) allows you to set up multiple channels, which can be either personal or group (the latter can be restricted or open), and posts can be as long as small leaflets. So you could set up different channels to "toot" and "expound", and separate channells for book group discussions and pictures of cats dressed as historical figures (if you must).

                  Thanks very much for the invitation! I was able to register so am hopefully @jon ... it's a great example of the usability challenges: now that I've signed up though it's not clear what to do next, my default feed is empty (makes sense, I'm not following anybody yet) but what am I supposed to do? And for that matter, i wanted to be @jdp23@social.communitarium.org and chose that for the shortname for my initial channel but apparently that wasn't the right approach. Oh well. These things are all fixable but the project never got critical mass in the community to get stuff like this fixed. Still, looking forward to playing with it!

                  And this is all intensely political, so agreed about the political aspects. Here's some of my perspectives on that - https://privacy.thenexus.today/if-not-now-when/ and https://privacy.thenexus.today/strategies-for-the-free-fediverses/
